[ITA] La calcarenite è una roccia sedimentaria caratterizzata da colore giallo, grana sabbiosa e buona porosità, di facile lavorazione e di bell'aspetto molto usata nell'Italia meridionale. Nella Valle dei Templi di Agrigento, è stata utilizzata dagli antichi greci per innalzare tutti gli edifici votivi tra cui il Tempio della Concordia, edificato nel 430 avanti Cristo e incendiato ne 406 a.C. dai Cartaginesi.
I templi agrigentini sono stati costruiti con una calcarenite organogena, molto porosa ed eterogenea, tenera e friabile, facilmente alterabile per azione del vento e dell’umidità (di risalita dal terreno e meteorica). Questi fattori hanno profondamente modificato la pietra stessa determinandone una lenta ma inesorabile polverizzazione, annullando a volte le scanalature degli elementi lapidei e rendendo le colonne simili a torsoli di mela o a elementi che ricordano un formaggio svizzero.
[ENG] Calcarenite is a sedimentary rock yellow in color, characterized by a sandy grain and good porosity, easy to work, widely used for construction in southern Italy. In the Agrigento's Temples Valley, it has been used by ancient Greeks to erect all the votive buildings including the famous Concordia Temple, built in 430 BC and burned in 406 BC by the Carthaginians.
Agrigento temples were built with this organogenic sandstone, heterogeneous and very porous, tender and friable, which is easily altered by the action of wind and humidity (rising from the ground and meteoric). These factors have deeply altered the stone, determining a slow but inexorable pulverization, sometimes canceling the grooves on the stone elements and making the columns block look similar to apple cores or elements resembling a Swiss cheese.

1. Observe the different reaction to erosion by fossils compared to the rock in which they are inserted. Erosion here is caused by rain and wind: how would you describe the fossils' behavior with respect to these two factors?
2. Now look at the rock cliff south of the road: can you see many fossils? In your opinion, what is the reason?
