Bugs warning! This series of caches has been placed to take you around the park to some of my favourite spots. A great spot for watching the steam trains and close to stables where we went pony treking. This is a popular spot so please leave this cache for another time if there's too many muggles about. 1968 Peterborough was designated a new town and as part of the planning a new park was created. Ferry Meadows is at the heart of Nene Park, which stretches west along the valley of the river Nene from the city centre to Wansford. Ferry Meadows has 500 acres of lakes, woodland, grassland and meadows. Most of the land was originally agricultural and also on the flood plain of the river.
As part of the construction of the roads in and around Peterborough, more than 5,000,000 tonnes of gravel was extracted to form what are now the lakes at Ferry Meadows.
The park is a lovely area for cycling, walking and picnics. It has a range of leisure activities from sailing and pedallos on the lake, to childrens play areas and a mini railway. During the summer there are a number of events hosted at the park and a popular park run at the weekend all year round. There's a visitor centre, toilets and two cafes. Car parking in the park is plentiful (charges apply); there's limited free parking at the Ferry Bridge end of the park. Wheelchair users can get pretty close on the paths but will need someone to retrieve the cache for them. Stealth is required when the park is busy.
