Considered the largest orthodox church currently in existence in Bucharest, the church is a short distance south of Unirii Square.
There was another church, built in 1768, founded by the ruler Scarlat Ghica, finished by his son, ruler Alexandru Ghica. Because of the earthquake and fire damage, it was decided to leave the settlement.
The present church was built between 1852-1858 and painted in oil, in Renaissance style, including the tutela by Gh. Tattarescu. In 1885, a strong wind dwindled the turrets of the two turrets from the main façade, being immediately restored, but not respecting their original appearance.
In 1954, after the 1940 earthquake deterioration, capital repairs took place. On this occasion, two balconies were added to the interior and a third balcony was under the existing one for the choir and the painting was washed. After 1966 there were works to strengthen the turrets and vaults and subsoiling replacing the original foundations of oak posts with a general reinforced concrete radial. Restoration work was done under the guidance of Acad. Prof. Eng. Aurel Beleş, Eng. Dumitru Gh. Popescu, Eng. Ioan Eugen Beleş.

Major damage occurred in the earthquakes of 1977 and 1986, when subway works affected the altar of the church, after which other major consolidations were executed.
The impressive space (41.40 x 20 m) preserves the original neo-gothic appearance. The plan is rectangular, consisting of a single ship preceded by a small vestibule and finished eastward with the polygonal apse of the Altar. The entrance is through a portico between the side towers, having a central arch and two narrower sidewalls, supported on pairs of columns.
Inside, the ship is covered with a semicylindrical vault system, arches and pendants, over which the main tower rises in the center of the nave. The large windows are decorated with stained-glass windows made in Vienna.
During the rebuilding of the church the graves attributed to the founders and their families were preserved.
The church has a finished roof with fronts on the facades. The outer ornamentation is made with neo-gothic elements, being treated with red ceramic elements, cornice friezes, window frames, rosettes from the side facades. Above the entrance there is a large stone carved stone.

Deasupra intrării se află o mare rozasă sculptată in piatră.
