봉래폭포
봉래폭포는 총 3단으로 구성되어 있다. 상부에서부터 (A)과 (B)이 첫번째단을 이루고, (C)이 두번째와 세번째 단을 구성하고 있다. 총 낙차는 약 30m 유량은 3,000톤/일 이상이며 울릉도 남부 일대의 중요한 상수원으로 활용되고 있다.
Bongrae waterfall is composed of three steps, with clear boundaries between them. The first step consists of the uppermost (A) and (B), the second step develops in the weak part of (C), the third step ranges from the bottom of the second step to the bottom of valley, The waterfall is 30 meters high. Because the discharge quantity of the fall reaches 3,000 tons/day, it has long been used as drinking water for residents living in southern Ulleungdo island.
응회암 : 응회암은 화산에서 뿜어져 나온 암석부스러기가 쌓여 만들어진 암석
조면암 : 주로 알칼리 장석(長石)으로 이루어진 화산암. 흰색ㆍ검은색ㆍ회색을 띠며, 감촉이 까칠까칠하고 얼룩무늬가 있음. 화학 성분은 화강암과 비슷하나, 조직이 전혀 다름. 울릉도에 많이 분포함.
집괴암 : 화산암괴, 화산탄(火山炭), 화산력(火山礫) 따위의 화산 분출물 부스러기가 무질서하게 모여 굳어져서 생긴 암석
Tuff, also known as volcanic tuff, is a type of rock made of volcanic ash ejected from a vent during a volcanic eruption.
Trachyte is an igneous volcanic rock with an aphanitic to porphyritic texture. It is the volcanic equivalent of syenite. The mineral assemblage consists of essential alkali feldspar; relatively minor plagioclase and quartz or a feldspathoid such as nepheline may also be present.
Agglomerate is a coarse accumulation of large blocks of volcanic material that contains at least 75% bombs. Volcanic bombs differ from volcanic blocks in that their shape records fluidal surfaces: they may, for example, have ropy, cauliform, scoriaceous, or folded, chilled margins and spindle, spatter, ribbon, ragged, or amoeboid shapes.
폭포의 형성과 유지
암석들간의 강도 차에 의해 차별침식을 받아서 여러 단의 폭포가 형성되었다. 하부의 암석이 침식되면 상부의 암석은 무너지게 될 것이다. 이렇게 봉래폭포는 점차 뒤로 물러나게 된다. 이러한 침식을 두부침식이라 한다.
Because upper rock is much denser and harder compared to lower rocks, composed of volcanic ash and breccia, its resistance to weathering and erosion is high. In the long run, only the upper part of the waterfall can survive and the bottom part of the falls will break down causing the rest of rock mass to break down, as the fall moves backwards. This kind of erosion is referred to as headward erosion in geological terms.
