44 South Village is a military dependents’ village which located opposite to Taipei 101 building in Xinyi District. Due to urban development, only a portion of the village is reserved for usage of cultural and creative industry and exhibition. It seems like more and more difficult to find a military dependents' village in Taipei City now.
Back in the days of 1948, 44 Arsenal which located at Qingdao province in China retreated to Taiwan for back-up in the war between KMT and CCP. Government built a village on the south of the arsenal to settle down the dependents of workers. This is the name came from of this village. The pattern you see on the wall is the logo of 44 Arsenal.
At the very beginning, this area only had fields, river and railway. The red arrow in the photo indicates the route of river, and the blue arrow indicates the railway which used to transport coal. The view is quite different from today.
Each house has no enogh space, so the residents built attic and the window on the roof to accommodate more people. That's why this park built similar slopes to commemorate this unique feature in this village.
Now even those old buildings are not existing anymore, you still can visit this village to admire the unique features. It's always crowded here on weekends because a lot of vendors gather around here. At night, you can enjoy the beautiful view of 101 building nearby. The most important is that you can find a cache and enjoy geocaching in this village. Have fun !
