The western section of the trail starts from the Dongpu trailhead through Guangao and Batongguan to Mt. Jade main Peak. Along the trail there are spectacular geologic sights such as river terraces, U- and V-shaped valleys, the Yunlong and Yinu waterfalls, jinmendong Cliff.
The trail also goes through thousand-year-old cypress groves, the Batongguan grasslands, and all kinds of warm temperate zone forest cover. Due to less human disturbance, animal activities of various birds, Reeve’s muntjac, Formosan sambars, Formosan werows, and other mammals are commonly seen, even the traces of the Formosan black bear. Along with the remains of Japanese-era police substation, this is the best route for experiencing the wild and nature as well as the historical contexts.
The hiking distance from the trailhead at Borough 1 of Dongpu to Yunlong Waterfall is 3.9 km (2.5 hours) and it is 1.9 km (1 hour) from Yunlong Waterfall to Lele Cabin. The hiking distance from Lele Cabin to Guangao is 8.2 Km (4.5 hours) and it is 2.3 Km (1 hour) from Guangao to the Batongguan Grasslands.
八通關越道西段自東埔登山口經關高、八通關可至玉山主峰，沿途可觀賞河階段丘、U形及V形河谷，雲龍及乙女2處懸谷瀑布、金門峒斷崖等壯觀地質地形景觀外，日治駐在所遺址、千年樹齡的檜木林、八通關大草原及各種溫暖帶林相植被豐富，因人為干擾較少，不僅鳥類資源薈萃，山羌、台灣水鹿、台灣長鬃山羊 (台灣野山羊) 等哺乳類動物活動頻繁，甚至可見台灣黑熊蹤跡，是體驗自然生態與歷史人文的最佳路線。
東埔—鄰登山口至雲龍瀑布約3.9公里，約需2.5小時，雲龍瀑布至樂樂山屋約1.9公里，約需1小時，樂樂山屋至關高約8.2公里，約需4.5小時，關高至八通關草原約2.3公里，約需1小時。
Yunlong Waterfall is located at 1,640 meters above sea level. The waterfall cuts through the Batongguan Historic Trail, with abundant water flowing year-round. Crashing from the steep cliff, one can undoubtedly felt its tremendous force and majestic presence.
雲龍瀑布位於海拔1,640公尺的八通關古道上，為上中下三層的懸谷式瀑布，古道從中穿越，終年水量豐沛，由於瀑布懸掛在峭壁上，可以感受到它磅薄的氣勢。
