These magnificent, ornate park gates are the official entrance to Victoria Park. As the park is unfenced they are entirely redundant, but they make a great landmark.
*The Roman road from Leicester to Colchester passed nearby, so did the Romans build them? No, in Roman times there was no park, never mind gates; this would have been farmland, grazing or even woods.
The gates date back to 1931, when the former mayor Sir Jonathan North donated them in memory of his wife, Kate North, who had died the year before.
