Geocache Description:

Another school sign cache in Foothills District.

New Valley #4289

By 1927 there were 6 school-aged children and three fathers applied to the Provincial Government for a school.  These three dads became the school trustees.  The school was named for the New Valley oil well close to the school.  Probably the only school ever named after an oil well.

The school opened in January 1928 with 6 pupils but with room for 24 students in 24 brand new desks.  These desks came in three sizes for the various sized students.  The school was heated with a central wood and coal stove.  This stove had a dishpan of water on the top for humidity in the winter months and for the students to warm their lunch brought in glass jars.  This lunch could have been soup, stew or beans or anything else brought from home that needed to be heated..

The school closed in 1944 with the students being taken by bus to Fordville School and later to Sheep Creek School prior to it being moved into Millarville.
