The furthest West school sign in the Foothills District.

This sign is on a curve in the road so caution is required, especially if children are helping you get this cache.

Square Butte #4008

By 1922, there were enough students in the area that a school was needed.  Logs were plentiful and a local man was hired to build the school.  This is one of a very few log-cabin style schools built anywhere in Alberta.  For the first few years, school was held from May to December.

The name was taken from a close by geographical feature.

By 1946, student numbers were declining and one family started to take their children and some of the neighbour kids to Millarville.  The school closed in 1952.

After closing the school building was used as a community centre until the Kew community Hall was moved in.  Shortly after this the Square Butte school building burned to the ground.
