뜨거운 용암이 지표로 분출하면 땅, 공기나 물이 용암을 빠르게 식힌다. 용암의 위아래가 빠르게 식으면서 주상 절리는 점차 안쪽으로 전파된다. 이 과정에서 그 밀도가 높아지면서 긴장 스트레스를 받고 응축하게 된다. 이 스트레스가 바위의 인장강도를 넘어서면 바위에 균열이 생긴다. 균열은 용암 흐름의 표면에 정확한 각도로 생기게 된다. 이 때문에 절리의 기둥들은 통상 용암이 위와 아래에서 내부로 냉각되어질 때 지표에 노출되는 표면에 수직을 이루게 된다. 기둥면의 각도는 수축시점에 120°를 이룬다. 이래서 우리가 보는 대부분의 주상절리는 6각형을 이루게 되는 것이다.
Columnar jointing is formed when a lava flow cools quickly, from the outside of the flow to the center of the flow. This causes the rock to contract as it becomes more dense which in turn causes tensional stresses. If these stresses exceed the tensile strength of the rock, it will fracture. The fractures occur at right angles to the surface of the lava flow. This is why the columns are vertical in outcrop, as they were cooled from the top and bottom inward. Jointing also forms at 120 degree angles to one another around the point of contraction. This forms the hexagonal column that we see today.
용암의 내부가 식어감에 따라 표면에 만들어진 절리가 내부로 진행되는데, 상하의 냉각표면에서 시작된 절리는 중간부에서 만나면서 그 형성이 종료된다. 이때 상부와 하부의 열전도가 달라 기둥의 두께가 달라진다. 냉각이 진행되는 단계에서 용암류 내부가 뜨거워 유동하게 되면, 내부에서는 상하의 주상절리와는 방향과 크기가 다른 엔테블래쳐가 형성될 수 있다.
When the lava flow is getting cooled, jointing first started on the surface is expanding inward. Jointings started from the top and bottom of the lava flow meet at the middle part and then finish the formation of the columnar joint. Due to the heat conduction diffenence between top and bottom of the lava flow, the thinkness of two joints group can be diffenent. When the lava flow in the center moves as a rusult of cooling, entablature can be formed. Normally columnar joints in entablature is different from those in upper and lower colonnades in its direction and size.
