Greetings and Welcome to New London’s McKinley Park. This small urban park bears a stone with a plaque
“To commemorate the men who served in the
War with Spain
The Philippine Insurrection
And the China Relief Expedition
1898-1902.”
It is also the last (or first!) stop along New London’s “Sculpture Mile” stretching from here South along Williams Street, left onto Broad and beginning (...concluding?) at the top of State Street http://www.hollycroft.org/pdfs/Madison%20and%20NL%20Mile%202018.pdf. The string of sculptures aspires to expose the public to “Contemporary Sculpture up close” inviting folks of all ages to gently touch and explore without fear of velvet ropes or stern looks from art gallery security guards.
The installation found here is a series of silhouettes made by artist Wendy Klemperer who lit some of her existing art and plasma cut the shadows that were cast.
I find the blending of modern industrial tools and techniques with the primal and ancient subject matter to be an interesting counterpoint. What do YOU think of the sculptures? Let us know in your log!
