This year our part of the World Wide Flash Mob (WWFM XVI) will be at the Santa Clara Branch of the Washington County Library System.

Washington County Library - Santa Clara Branch
The Santa Clara branch of the Washington County Library Systems was completed in 2003. Near the entrance is a large sundial decorated with constellations used to find the north star.

Sundial
A sundial is a device that tells the time of day when there is sunlight by the apparent position of the Sun in the sky. In the narrowest sense of the word, it consists of a flat plate (the dial) and a gnomon, which casts a shadow onto the dial. As the Sun appears to move across the sky, the shadow aligns with different hour-lines, which are marked on the dial to indicate the time of day.

The sundial at the Santa Clara branch does not only show the solar time but also the location of the shadow at the Summer and Winter Solstice and the Fall and Spring Equinox is marked on the ground

Summer Solstice
The summer solstice occurs when one of the Earth's poles has its maximum tilt toward the Sun and the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky and is the day with the longest period of daylight.  The summer solstice for 2019 was on June 21 at 9:54 A.M. the day before this event.

WWFM – World Wide Flash Mobs – A fun and friendly way to promote geocaching around the world. Thousands of geocachers at dozens of coordinated events spanning the globe, gathering at the same time.

Sonny and Sandy of the PodCacher podcast came up with the WWFM idea in 2007 after attending a mega-event. It was meant to be a fun “opposite” of a mega-event: all the cool aspects of a geocaching event, crammed into 15 minutes of excitement. An added dimension is represented by the letters "WW" - World Wide - these events occur across the planet on the same day at (mostly) the same time! These caching events are intended to bring geocachers together in a creative way, as well as introduce others (newbies) to the hobby.
