A BIT OF HISTORY! Smuggler’s Cove in Skagway, Alaska, is a protected tidal inlet within the Yakutania Point hiking trail system that served as a landing spot for rumrunners during the Prohibition era (1920–1933). Location and Access: The cove is located near the Skagway Heliport, accessible via a moderate 2-mile loop trail from First Avenue, past the airport terminal and across the Skagway River. Prohibition Activities: During the "Bone Dry" period in Alaska, which preceded and overlapped with national Prohibition, local bootleggers utilized the secluded cove to offload contraband liquor smuggled from Canada. Current Status: Today, the site is a National Park Service managed historic area, known for its panoramic views of Taiya Inlet and its association with Skagway’s lawless gold rush and prohibition history.
