Geocache Description:

Forth River Bridge was Officially opened to traffic by Hon D.A Cashion MHA, Minister for lands adn works on the 25th of March 1960. Forth was the second settlement in the county of Devon, spreading its wings in the 1840's even before Devonport was settled. The population of just 1000 people makes it the kind of town where everyone knows everybody and you will be made to feel extremely welcome. Many of the original buildings have been replaced since settlement, but there is still a strong sense of history about this old town.

Across the road at the hub of this history is the Historic Bridge Hotel, which is one of the town's oldest buildings and still stands in almost its original form. It was first licensed and opened in 1872, and has managed to retain the old world charm and atmosphere of those times from the past. The building is in fact heritage listed and regarded as a national treasure. In fact it is also regarded as one of Tasmania's leading live music venues, with something always going on here. There really is no better place in town to grab a country cooked meal, enjoy a beer and a good yarn with some mates or your family. It’s full of history, some say it’s haunted and it’s believed to be the longest continually running establishment in Tasmania with over 33 publicans so far! Standing strong without a pokie in sight, the locals like it this way.

River Forth in north Tasmania starts below Mount Pelion West at an elevation of 1020m and flows into the Tasman Sea of the South Pacific Ocean. The River Forth drops around 1020m over its 103km length. The River Forth flows through Lake Cethana (217m), Lake Barrington (178m) and Lake Paloona (66m).6 creeks and rivers flow into the River Forth. The five longest tributaries are: Wilmot River, Dove River, Hansons River, Forth Falls Creek and Hartnett Rivulet. As you stand on the river’s edge you will notice that the river runs fast in some areas of the river it has been calculated to run at 60 miles (95 km).
