Geocache Description:

You are looking for a 4-inch long cache that commemorates the many geocoins that the WGA (Wisconsin Geocaching Association) has produced over the years. There are not any geocoins or trackables in the cache. You'll need to bring your own pen.

What is a Geocoin?

Sometimes collectable and sometimes not, a geocoin is a custom coin created by individuals or groups like the WGA as a kind of signature item or calling card. Like “travel bug” trackables, you don’t keep them if you find them in a geocache, rather you move them along to another cache so they can continue on their journey. Each geocoin is assigned a unique tracking ID number which allows them to travel from geocache to geocache, picking up stories along the way. Geocoins found in a geocache are not collectable, but those that you buy from geocaching.com or from organizations like the WGA are yours to keep or move along.

Picking up a Geocoin

As mentioned previously, a geocoin is a trackable coin (or sometimes a special shape) that travels from place to place. If you found a geocoin the first thing you need to do is log it online so that you can add your own story to its journey.

Step 1. Get the Tracking Number

In order to log your find and "grab" the geocoin, you first need to locate the coin's tracking number. The number is stamped somewhere on the coin.

Step 2. Visit the Geocoin's Page

Each geocoin has its own web page! To visit the page, either go to the cache page for the geocache where you found the coin and look for it in the inventory list, or enter the tracking number in the trackable search box at geocaching.com. Each geocoin has a mission that is listed on its page, such as "travel from cache to cache" or "visit Florida, Alaska & Hawaii." You become part of its story to continue or complete its mission!

Step 3. Found it? Log it!

Once you’re at the geocoin listing, you can write a log to let the owner know you found it, either by "retrieving" it or "discovering" it. By "retrieving" the geocoin you are taking it and temporarily putting it in your geocaching account's online inventory. This will ultimately allow you to drop the trackable geocoin into another cache. Alternatively, by "discovering" the geocoin, you are noting that the coin is there but you didn't take it to move along. It's still in the geocache.

Dropping off the trackable

When logging a "found" log on a geocache or an "attended" log for a geocache event, you can reference on the app or web page the geocoins or other trackables that you have in inventory, and then select the geocoin or trackable that you are dropping into that cache or event. That's it!

Here's a snapshot of the geocoins that the WGA has produced over the years:

Who or what is the WGA?

The Wisconsin Geocaching Association (WGA) is a group of fun-loving, outdoor-minded people dedicated to promoting geocaching within the state of Wisconsin. The WGA organizes geocaching events, works with land owners/managers on geocaching policies, educates organizations and the public at large about geocaching, and facilitates communication between WGA members via their website, events, and newsletters.
