This virtual is on Tiritiri Matangi Island in the Hauraki Gulf. It is a Department of Conservation sanctuary for rare and endangered animals. The Department of Conservation does not allow traditional geocaches on the island so it's the perfect place for a virtual. Come and see the wonderful animals that live here and visit this interesting lighthouse.
The lighthouse was first lit on 1 January, 1865. At night a white light flashes every 15 seconds at a brightness of 1.2 million candle power. It's batteries are charged by solar panels. The tower is made of cast iron.
Bring your own water and lunch in a sealed container as there are no food outlets on the island. Check the other rules about visiting the island on the Fullers Ferries website and your ferry ticket.
