The Sydney Opera House
The Sydney Opera House is the most well-known of all of Australia’s landmarks and graces the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as one of the world's great architectural icons. The Opera House building is located on Bennelong Point in the Sydney CBD and surrounded by the beautiful scenery of Sydney Harbour and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Visited by over 11 million people annually, this stunning structure houses multiple venues that host more than 3,000 performances each year. The Sydney Opera House is home to four prominent companies including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Opera Australia, the Sydney Theatre Company and The Australian Ballet.
Regarded as a 20th century architectural masterpiece, the Sydney Opera House was designed by Danish architect, Jørn Utzon, who won an international competition for its design. The distinctive white curved roof shells of the Opera House represent the Blowing Sails of Ships on the Ocean. The structure is 600 feet long and 394 feet wide (183 by 120 meters) at its widest point.
Attending a performance is not required to experience the full splendour of the Sydney Opera House. All outdoor areas are Free to Explore. Daily tours are available in several languages where visitors can explore the halls, venues, backstage, dressing rooms and more.
