Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Walk of Heroes Veterans Memorial Park

The Walk of Heroes Veterans War Memorial is a monument in the making. It is located on a three-acre site at Randy Poynter Lake in Rockdale County. This serene setting provides the perfect backdrop for visitors to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city to remember, reflect, and rejoice as they develop a greater awareness of the six major wars from 1900 through today. The goal is to foster a common understanding of the sacrifices and uncommon dedication of veterans and their families - including the ultimate sacrifice of laying down one's life.

A key feature in the Walk of Heroes Veterans War Memorial is the Walk of Heroes itself. This walkway which spans the length of the memorial is crossed by 70 marble bands ranging from 10" to 20" wide engraved with the actions of America's military during that year. These will be expanded to accommodate the Global War on Terrorism since 9/11/2001.

Each marble band represents a year where American Armed Forces were deployed overseas in armed conflicts and as peacekeepers and is engraved with the year, the country and a brief description of the conflict.

As you walk around the monuments, you will notice missing pieces and plaques. This is due to the vandalism that occurred on 12/15/2017. All the stolen pieces were recovered; however, the damage was extensive and they are working on replacing all of them, so please bear with them while the restore the Walk of Heroes.

The paved walking trail around the monument is 1/3 of a mile. At the halfway point you will see the main wall topped with 9 flags. As you approach this monument, on the left-hand side you will see 2 plaques. The top plaque is in memory of Ted Dennis Britt.
