Geocache Description:


Take a walk and discover a little about the history of The Entrance.

The posted coordinates will take you to the Pelican Plaza at The Entrance where you can observe the local pelican feeding at 3.30pm each day.

The Entrance was first discovered by Europeans when shipwrecked fishermen landed on the coast in 1796. They were fed by local Aborigines who guided them most of the way home. When they returned to Sydney they told of a white woman living with the indigenous people and this resulted in a search for an escaped convict named Mary Morgan. The search party became the first Europeans to discover Tuggerah Lake.

The area was first settled in the 1820s by Henry Holden. During the late 1800s and early 1900s the area contained many guest houses, the first of which was Dunleith Guest house opened in 1895 at The Entrance North, leading to The Entrance becoming a popular tourist destination, which it still is today.

 

To complete the virtual cache, you will need to find some information, send us the answers to a few questions and take a specific photo.

At WP1:

At WP2:

There was an information sign here about one of the guesthouses in the area but this has been removed (July 2022) for the seat surrounding the tree.

1. How many circles are on the horizontal base of the nearby sculpture?

At WP3:

1. How often was this business open originally?

2. How did the staff arrive?

3. Where did this business move to?

This one may be missing, some people say they are unable to find it, others send answers, if you cannot find the required sign, to do with the bank, please tell us what shop is closest to the WP.

At the statue:

Take a photo of yourself and/or your GPSr at a pelican statue and add it to your log. (GPSr must be in the photo to claim a find).
