Sotien aikana 1939-40 ja 1941-44 Suomen armeijan päämaja toimi Mikkelissä. Ylipäällikkö, Suomen marsalkka Mannerheim lähimpine avustajineen sijoitettiin keskuskansakoululle. Mikkeli toimi jo 1918 päämajakaupunkina, kun kansalaissodassa valkoisten päämaja oli sijoitettu Seurahuoneelle huhtikuun 11. päivästä toukokuun 16. päivään.
Mannerheimin patsas eli Päämajapatsas
valmistui vuonna 1967 ja on Kalervo Kallion suunnittelema, Suomen marsalkka Mannerheimin 100-vuotissyntymäpäivän kunniaksi pystytetty muistomerkki. Materiaalina on käytetty pronssia ja jalusta on graniittia.
Alun perin Suur-Savon (nykyisin Marskin) aukion reunalle sijoitettu veistos on sittemmin löytänyt sijansa Hallitustorilta. Mikkelin kaupunki on tällä tavoin halunnut vaalia päämajakaupunkiin ja ylipäällikköön liittyviä perinteitä. Päämajapatsas kuvaa Mannerheimia sellaisena kuin kaupungin asukkaat hänet muistavat - kävelemässä kaupungin kaduilla.

[ENG] The headquarters of the Finnish army was located in Mikkeli during the wars 1930-1940 and 1941-1944. The commander in chief Mannerheim, the marshal of Finland, stayed at the central primary school. Mikkeli was the headquarters already in 1918 when the whites’ base was located in the Seurahuone during 11th April to 16th May.
The statue of Mannerheim i.e. the Päämaja statue
was finished in 1967 and designed by Kalervo Kallio. It is the memorial erected for the memory of the 100th birthday of Mannerheim. Bronze was used as the material for the statue and granite for the base.
Originally the statue was located in the square of Suur-Savo (today called Marski square, "Marskin aukio" ), later has been relocated to the current place in the main market square. This way the city of Mikkeli has shown appreciation towards the memories of the commander in chief and the traditions of being a former headquarters’ city.
The Päämaja statue depicts Mannerheim as the citizen of Mikkeli remember him - walking on the streets of the city.
