Geocache Description:

In the second half of the 19th Century the City of London wanted a new bridge built that wouldn’t disrupt the traffic so they had a competition. Over 50 designs were submitted for consideration, some of which are on display at the Tower Bridge Exhibition. In October 1884 Horace Jones, the City Architect, in collaboration with John Wolfe Barry, offered the chosen design for Tower Bridge.

It took eight years, five major contractors using 432 construction workers each day to build Tower Bridge. Two massive piers were sunk into the river bed to support the construction and over 11,000 tons of steel provided the framework for the Towers and Walkways. This framework was clad in Cornish granite and Portland stone to protect the underlying steelwork and to give the Bridge a more pleasing appearance.

When it was built Tower Bridge was the largest and most sophisticated bascule bridge ever completed. The bascules were originally operated by steam power but since 1976 they have been powered by oil and electricity. It takes about one minute to raise the bridge to the maximum of 86 degrees.

Tower Bridge is one of the most iconic sights in London – somewhere everyone wants to visit. This virtual shows the bridge from a relatively unknown view along the Thames Path to the east of the bridge. From the bridge itself walk along ‘Shad Thames’ past some of the old warehouse buildings for about 100 yards until you come to ‘Maggie Blake’s Cause’ which will take you to the Thames Path and a fantastic view of the bridge. Walk a short way along the Thames Path past various ship related objects until you come to a large anchor and some chains.
