Monterosso al Mare è al centro di un piccolo golfo naturale, protetto da una modesta scogliera artificiale, a levante di Punta Mesco nella Riviera spezzina. Costituisce la parte più occidentale delle Cinque Terre. Secondo alcune fonti storiche un primo insediamento umano - denominato Albareto - sorse nelle immediate alture dell'attuale territorio comunale di Monterosso. Il villaggio, nel quale sono state rinvenute alcune sepolture dei Liguri preromani, fu poi distrutto nel 643 dai Longobardi di re Rotari. La parte più antica del borgo è raccolta sotto il castello, nella valle del torrente Buranco. Più tardi il paese si è sviluppato sull'altra sponda del torrente e sul piano dell'insenatura, delimitata a levante dalla punta Corone e a ponente dalla scogliera della torre Aurora.

Monterosso al Mare is located in the center of a small natural gulf, protected by a modest artificial cliff, east of Punta Mesco in the riviera of La Spezia. It constitutes the westernmost part of the Cinque Terre. According to some historical sources, a first human settlement - called Albareto - arose in the immediate heights of the current municipal area of Monterosso. The village, in which some burials of the pre-Roman Ligurians were found , was then destroyed in 643 by the Lombards of King Rotari. The oldest part of the village is gathered under the castle, in the valley of the Buranco stream. Later the town developed on the other bank of the stream and on the level of the inlet, bordered to the east by Punta Corone and to the west by the cliff of the Aurora tower.
