O Cemitério da Consolação é a mais antiga necrópole em funcionamento no município de São Paulo. É uma das principais referências do Brasil na área da arte tumular. Localizado no distrito da Consolação, região central da cidade, foi fundado em 10 de julho de 1858 e inaugurado oficialmente em 15 de agosto do mesmo ano, com o nome de Cemitério Municipal, tendo uma área de 76 340 m². O terreno foi doado por Domitila de Castro Canto e Melo, a Marquesa de Santos, que se encontra ali sepultada.
Seu principal objetivo na época era de garantir a salubridade e evitar epidemias, pois viria para substituir o hábito então recorrente de sepultar os mortos no terreno das igrejas. É um dos 22 cemitérios públicos administrados pelo Serviço Funerário do Município de São Paulo.
Com a prosperidade advinda da aristocracia da cafeicultura e o surgimento de uma expressiva burguesia em São Paulo, o local passou a abrigar obras de arte produzidas por escultores de renome, que serviam para ornamentar os jazigos de famílias abastadas e de personalidades importantes na história do Brasil. O cemitério possui em sua área um ambiente arborizado e tranquilo, oposto da agitada rua de mesmo nome. O ambiente apresenta cerca de trezentas esculturas e trabalhos de artistas importantes, como Victor Brecheret e o arquiteto Ramos de Azevedo, que projetou o portão monumental do cemitério.
Abriga um grande número de sepulturas de figuras conhecidas, além de personalidades da história paulistana, como Tarsila do Amaral, Mário de Andrade, Monteiro Lobato, Ramos de Azevedo, Marquesa de Santos, Líbero Badaró e o monumental mausoléu da Família Matarazzo, considerado o maior da América do Sul, com uma altura de aproximadamente um prédio de três andares.
Mantém visitas guiadas, mediante prévio agendamento, por meio do projeto Arte tumular, que é coordenado pela administração local. Essas visitas têm o intuito de compreender as obras de arte, a história do cemitério e das pessoas e famílias sepultadas no local.

Marquesa de Santos: Não espere encontrar um túmulo imponente, ao contrário, essa figura histórica está sepultada em um jazigo simples, com uma bela escultura de mármore de um anjo. Na parte de trás de escultura, na base de mármore, existe uma inscrição gravada. Iniciais de um nome e endereço.

Monteiro Lobato: Aqui você encontrará um túmulo não muito tradicional, com traços mais modernos. Além do nome do famoso escritor brasileiro você encontrará outros nomes, de familiares dele. Um desses nomes é um apelido.

Família Jafet: Um imponente túmulo com uma obra em bronze do artista Materno Garibaldi. Essa escultura chama a atenção por sua beleza e imponência. Vá até a parte traseira do túmulo, onde você verá uma porta que dá acesso aos jazigos.
Pergunta: Quantos pés descalços você consegue ver na parte traseira da escultura?
Conde Francesco Matarazzo: Aqui você encontrará o maior mausoléu de todos os Cemitérios da cidade de São Paulo. Conta com diversas esculturas. Uma delas, na parte esquerda do Mausóleo tem a inscrição “MATER ANGELORUN” e representa a Mãe Angelical, com diversas figuras de jovens e crianças ao seu redor.

CEMETERY OF CONSOLAÇÃO
The Consolation Cemetery is the oldest necropolis in operation in the city of São Paulo. It is one of the main references of Brazil in the area of the tomb art. Located in the district of Consolação, central region of the city, was founded on July 10, 1858 and officially inaugurated on August 15 of the same year, with the name of Municipal Cemetery, having an area of 76,340 m². The land was donated by Domitila de Castro Canto e Melo, the Marquesa de Santos, who is buried there.
Its main purpose at the time was to ensure sanitation and avoid epidemics, since it would replace the recurring habit of burying the dead in the church grounds. It is one of the 22 public cemeteries administered by the Funeral Service of the Municipality of São Paulo.
With the prosperity of the coffee-growing aristocracy and the emergence of an expressive bourgeoisie in São Paulo, the place began to house works of art produced by renowned sculptors who served to decorate the deposits of wealthy families and important personalities in the history of Brazil . The cemetery has in its area a leafy and quiet environment, opposite the bustling street of the same name. The environment features about three hundred sculptures and works by important artists such as Victor Brecheret and the architect Ramos de Azevedo, who designed the monumental gate of the cemetery.
It houses a large number of graves of well-known figures, as well as personalities from the history of São Paulo, such as Tarsila do Amaral, Mário de Andrade, Monteiro Lobato, Ramos de Azevedo, Marquesa de Santos, Líbero Badaró and the monumental mausoleum of the Matarazzo Family, of South America, with a height of approximately a three-storey building.
It maintains guided visits, by means of previous scheduling, through the project Arte tumular, which is coordinated by the local administration. These visits are intended to understand the works of art, the history of the cemetery and the people and families buried there.

In order for you to register your visit to this Virtual Cache, you will have to visit 4 tombs and answer a question pertaining to each one. You will find below the reference Waypoints of the tombs.
Marquesa de Santos: Do not expect to find an imposing tomb, on the contrary, this historical figure is buried in a simple vault, with a beautiful marble sculpture of an angel. On the back of sculpture, on the marble base, there is a engraved inscription. Initials of a name and address.

Monteiro Lobato: Here you will find a not very traditional tomb with more modern features. Besides the name of the famous Brazilian writer you will find other names, from his relatives. One of these names is a nickname.

Jafet Family: An imposing tomb with a bronze work by the artist Materno Garibaldi. This sculpture draws attention to its beauty and grandeur. Go to the back of the tomb, where you will see a door leading to the graves.

Count Francesco Matarazzo: Here you will find the largest mausoleum of all the Cemeteries of the city of São Paulo. It has several sculptures.
