Korset här uppe på Borgberget är rest 1834, till tusenårsminnet av munken och missionären Ansgars besök på Birka på 830-talet. Han var troligen inte den förste och absolut inte den siste som kom för att försöka omvända hedningarna på ön, men den tidigaste vi känner namnet på. Framgången var dock skral, någon omvändelse i större skala skedde aldrig, och vid Ansgars återbesök 20 år senare fanns endast en spillra kvar av församlingen han grundade. Så kristnandet av Sverige kan inte tillskrivas honom, även om många tycks tro det.
Kampen om hedningarnas själar var dock intensiv, missionärer från både nuvarande Tyskland och England slogs om att få omvända de asatroende nordborna. Den tyska kyrkan kom att gå segrande ur striden, om än ett par hundra år senare. Trots detta är det märkligt nog ett keltiskt kors som rests här på berget, ett kors som har sitt ursprung på de brittiska öarna.

The cross up here on Borgberget was erected in 1834, in commemoration of the thousandth anniversary of the monk and missionary Ansgar's visit to Birka in the 830s. He was probably not the first and certainly not the last to come in an attempt to convert the pagans on the island, but he is the earliest one whose name we know. However, his success was minimal; no large-scale conversion ever took place, and when Ansgar revisited 20 years later, only a remnant of the congregation he had founded remained. Thus, the Christianization of Sweden cannot be attributed to him, although many seem to believe so.
The struggle for the souls of the pagans was intense, with missionaries from both present-day Germany and England competing to convert the Norse pagans. The German church ultimately emerged victorious from the struggle, albeit a couple of hundred years later. Despite this, it is oddly enough a Celtic cross that has been erected here on the mountain, a cross that has its origins in the British Isles
