Έχουν περάσει περισσότερα από εκατό χρόνια από τη στιγμή που ο τότε Πρωθυπουργός της Ελλάδας, Χαρίλαος Τρικούπης, οραματίσθηκε τη γεφύρωση των τριών χιλιομέτρων που χωρίζουν το Ρίο από το Αντίρριο.
Το 2004, το μεγαλόπνοο αυτό όραμα έγινε πραγματικότητα. Η Γέφυρα Ρίου-Αντιρρίου αποτελεί ορόσημο της Ελλάδας του 21ου αιώνα, ενώ ήταν προορισμένη να αλλάξει την καθημερινότητα μέρους των κατοίκων της χώρας. Η Γέφυρα Ρίου-Αντιρρίου είναι η μεγαλύτερη σε μήκος καλωδιωτή γέφυρα πολλαπλών ανοιγμάτων στον κόσμο, με συνεχές και πλήρως αναρτημένο κατάστρωμα 2.252 μέτρων. Τα θεμέλιά της βρίσκονται σε βάθος θαλάσσης που φτάνει μέχρι και τα 65 μέτρα. Τόσο αυτό όσο και η διάμετρος των θεμελίων που ανέρχεται σε 90 μέτρα αποτελούν παγκόσμια ρεκόρ για γέφυρα. Ωστόσο, σύμφωνα με τους κατασκευαστές, το καλύτερο ρεκόρ της εντυπωσιακής αυτής Γέφυρας είναι ότι κατασκευάστηκε «χωρίς κανένα σοβαρό ατύχημα, χωρίς να χυθεί ούτε μια σταγόνα αίματος».
Η Γέφυρα έχει τιμηθεί από τη διεθνή επιστημονική κοινότητα με 9 Διεθνή Βραβεία. Έρευνα του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών κατέδειξε ότι η Γέφυρα Ρίου-Αντιρρίου αποτελεί ένα ιδιαίτερα σημαντικό έργο για τη Δυτική Ελλάδα και τη χώρα γενικότερα, τόσο από οικονομική και αναπτυξιακή άποψη, όσο και από κοινωνική.

Since Harilaos Trikoupis’ vision when he was Prime Minister of Greece one hundred years ago, Greece had the great dream of a bridge crossing the 3 km of the Corinth Gulf’s strait.
In 2004, a long-standing dream became a reality. The Rion – Antirion bridge is the landmark of Greece’s 21st Century and a part of the country’s daily life which it was destined to change.
The Rion – Antirion Bridge is the longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge of the World with its 2,252 meters’ continuous and fully suspended deck. Its foundations lay on a seabed that reaches 65 meters of depth. This is a world record for a bridge as well as their diameter of 90 meters making of them the world’s largest bridge foundations. Although according to the constructors, the best record of this great Bridge, is that it was built “without any serious accident, without a single drop of blood”.
The Bridge has been awarded 9 International Awards by the scientific community. Research by the University of Patra proved that the Rion-Antirion Bridge is a particularly important project for Western Greece and Greece in general, both from a financial and development point of view as well as in terms of social impact.
