This is the longest Ferry route in the State of Texas, and for my money the best way to dolphins.
To Claim this virtual, tell me the name of the Ferry that you boarded.
Not required, post a photo while on the ferry.
Depending on the time of day, the wait can be very lengthy. You can stay in your car and take the ride over to the Bolivar Peninsula; or park nearby and walk on to the ferry. I prefer the Walk-on as you don't have to wait out TWO lines of traffic.
The posted coords have some history about this ferry on a granite plaque.
The trip is not that time consuming, but the load and unload of the vehicles will add time. I would budget about an hour for the round trip if you park, less if you intend to continue down the Bolivar Peninsula.
Pro Tip: There is a 2nd deck above the cars... That's a GREAT viewing area.
The ride will take you on a 2.7 mile trip across to the Bolivar Peninsula, saving you the long route around through Anahuac. On the way, you will see Seawolf Park; SS Selma (the Sunken concrete ship); Coast Guard vessels; large freight liners coming in and out of Galveston/Houston ports; Seagulls; Pelicans and other seabirds; and if you are lucky Dolphins! On my last trip on the Ferry we saw DOZENS of Dolphins (mothers and babies!). We even saw a them jumping completely out of the water in the bow of an outgoing freighter. You can feed the seagulls on the stern (Back) of the Ferry.
