CURIOSIDADES

• Don Pedro Dávila y Zúñiga descendía de judíos conversos.

• Las piezas romanas y algunas de las piedras con inscripciones, son traídas de Mérida y Cáparra. Don Pedro Dávila y Zúñiga de espíritu culto, quiere rodearse de un ambiente humanístico, y manda además grabar inscripciones latinas por todas partes.

• En el asiento del rellano hay una inscripción cuya traducción libre puede ser: "Pedro Ávila y María de Córdoba su esposa, Marqueses de Las Navas, él de Ávila y de piadosa familia, de treinta y dos años de edad, pusieron este asiento el año de 1540 para comodidad de las generaciones, a las que se desea felicidad y amor a la justicia" la cual ubicaría en 1508 el nacimiento de Don Pedro, y 1540 la construcción del Castillo.

• Las troneras presentes en la construcción del s.XVI son un motivo "heredado" de la arquitectura usual de los Castillos de la época, más que un elemento defensivo real.

• En el Castillo hay dos estancias con bóvedas planas, de las tres únicas que existen en el mundo. La tercera se encuentra en el Real Monasterio del Escorial. Incluso se dice de esta tercera, que Felipe II "la copió" al ver las del Castillo Magalia y que tanto llamaron su atención.
  También se dice que Don Pedro le gastó una broma al Rey cuando le enseñó la bóveda plana de su torre. Habiendo colocado con anterioridad una viga de madera a modo de soporte debajo de la piedra 'clave', empujó ante Felipe II dicho puntal, como si se fuera a desplomar todo el techo ante la falta de apoyo... No sabemos cómo se tomaría la broma Felipe II, pero parece que nadie perdió la cabeza con aquello.

• Allá por 1566 Don Pedro ("el Zúñiga") mandó esculpir una inscripción y el escudo de los trece roeles en una roca, como homenaje póstumo a su fallecida esposa. Podrás visitar la 'Piedra de los Trece Roeles' en N40° 33.822' W004° 23.707'

• La Marquesa en su testamento dispuso que "ni sus herederos ni sus criados, les pusieran tocas negras ni capirotes en la cabeza, so pena de maldición"

• El castillo alberga entre otros objetos de valor, un ladrillo con la firma de Santa Teresa. Quizá no tenga nada que ver pero Santa Teresa, de origen auténticamente nobiliario, llega a tratar a los Dávila como parientes (a la familia del segundo Marqués de Las Navas)

• Parece ser que existe un túnel que comunica el Castillo con el Convento, actualmente cegado. Se dice que había otro túnel que llevaba al Risco.

• Existen menciones a un pozo o salida de un subterráneo en la fachada sur del Castillo, donde terminaba la bóveda de un túnel en la que se apreciaban restos de escaleras. Dicha entrada daba pie a otra "verdadera" leyenda. Llamado 'el Pozo de las Brujas', estaba implicada una mora de bellos atributos como no podía ser de otra forma, y algún valeroso caballero.

• Si la investigación no me falla, la XIV Marquesa de Las Navas en la actualidad, es la princesa germano-española Victoria von Hohenlohe-Langenburg. También XX Condesa del Risco, entre otros títulos nobiliarios relacionados con la historia de Las Navas del Marqués.

¿ QUÉ ES MAGALIA QUONDAM ?

Su traducción más literal sería 'en otro tiempo choza' ('una vez choza', para ser más precisos)
Distintas fuentes dan traducciones ligeramente distintas como 'En otro tiempo casa rústica', 'En otro tiempo casa de labradores', que vendría a significar lo mismo. También haciendo alusión a la agricultura de entonces, con traducciones como 'Lugar de buenos pastos' o 'Lugar de pastos en otro tiempo'. E incluso lo que Don Pedro pretendía con esa inscripción, que vendría a decir 'Hubo una vez un lugar idílico'
Una traducción menos catedrática, 'Magalia, ¿dónde estás?' sería la que daría pie a 'La Leyenda de Magalia'
En cualquier caso, el Castillo tomó de esa inscripción 'MAGALIA' su nombre popular e incluso oficialmente aceptado.

- Sobre el cache:

Este cache es uno de los pocos virtuales que se van a publicar entre el 4 de junio de 2019 y 4 de junio de 2020. Sólo 4000 jugadores en todo el mundo hemos tenido la oportunidad de crear uno.
Puedes informarte sobre esta "recompensa" en el Blog de Geocaching.

Desde el instante en el que fui seleccionado para la creación de un cache Virtual, pensé en que esta sería la ubicación que elegiría para el mismo. Con este cache pretendo rendir homenaje al castillo de mi pueblo, Las Navas del Marqués, localidad a la que me sentiré ligado siempre.
¿¿ Y qué mejor ubicación para un "fantasma" que un castillo ??

Para completar el cache no es necesario entrar al recinto, pero te aconsejo que consultes la Web de 'Turismo Las Navas' para conocer los horarios tanto de apertura como de visitas concertadas. De otra forma no tendrás ocasión de conocer el BONITO e INTERESANTÍSIMO interior del Castillo.

REGISTRO DEL VIRTUAL

Hasta donde sé y he sido informado, para el registro de un virtual sólo es necesario demostrar que se ha estado físicamente donde se requiere. Además, he aprendido que los buscadores pueden registrar el cache como encontrado antes de la comprobación de los requerimientos, si los hubiera, por parte del propietario.

Así, para dar como bueno tu registro de encontrado, deberás incluir una foto tomada en la puerta exterior del Castillo que cumpla los siguientes requisitos:

Colocándote justo al lado del buzón negro que hay en la parte izquierda de la entrada, haz una foto del farol del otro lado de la puerta (exterior arriba) en la que salga además tu cara o parte de ella, o tu mano o parte de ella, o tu nick de Geocaching. Tienes un ejemplo en la foto SPOILER01 o SPOILER02

IMPORTANTE: Un Equipo, una foto distinta.
No se admitirán registros comunes, de equipo, o colectivos.

Los registros que no cumplan estos requerimientos no se darán por buenos, y serán borrados sin previo aviso.

OPCIONAL

Si quieres, lo puedes publicar en tu registro:

• Obviando las diferencias mencionadas según distintas fuentes consultadas, entre las reseñas históricas hay una que no es real. ¿Cuál?

• ¿Has visto el segundo escudo en la puerta exterior del recinto? (coordenadas del cache) Aunque digo 'segundo', realmente fue el primero [guiño] ¿Sabes a quién pertenece?

• Obviando banderas y cartelería, ¿cuántos escudos heráldicos puedes ver DENTRO del RECINTO del Castillo? (puedes usar decimales para responder)

• A poco observador que seas, podrás apreciar la "unión" en la construcción de las partes más modernas, con las supuestamente antiguas del Castillo. Sobre todo, hay dos puntos en distintas fachadas que a mí me llamaron la atención.

• Algunas reseñas antiguas son complicadas de ubicar en la actualidad, ya que el Castillo no mantiene todos los elementos que un día existieron, como en la fachada "de mediodía" (SurOeste) ¿sería por aquí por donde estaría el 'Pozo de las Brujas'? ¿estaría por aquí la boca abovedada a la que hace alusión Don Fidel Pérez-Mínguez en su libro 'Un Castillo y Varios Castellanos' de 1927?

CURIOSITIES

• Don Pedro Dávila y Zúñiga descended from Jewish converts.

• Roman pieces and some of the stones with inscriptions, are brought from Mérida and Cáparra. Don Pedro Dávila y Zúñiga of cultured spirit, wants to surround himself with a humanistic atmosphere, and also orders to engrave Latin inscriptions everywhere.

• In the seat of the landing there is an inscription whose free translation can be: "Pedro Ávila and María de Córdoba his wife, Marqueses de Las Navas, he of Ávila and of pious family, thirty-two years old, put this seat in the year 1540 for the comfort of the generations which is desired happiness and love of justice" which would place in 1508 the birth of Don Pedro, and 1540 the construction of the Castle.

• The trunks present in the construction of the sixteenth century are more of a motif "inherited" from the usual architecture of the Castles of the time, than a real defensive element.

• In the Castle there are two rooms with flat vaults, of the only three that exist in the world. The third is located in the Real Monasterio del Escorial. It is even said of this third, that Felipe II "copied" her upon seeing those of Magalia Castle and that so much caught her attention.
  It is also said that Don Pedro played a prank on the King when he showed him the flat vault of his tower. Having previously placed a wooden beam as a support under the 'key' stone, he pushed before Philip II that strut, as if he were going to collapse the whole roof in the face of lack of support... We don't know how Philip II would take the joke, but it seems that no one lost their head with that.

• Back in 1566 Don Pedro ("the Zúñiga") ordered the sculpting of an inscription and the shield of the thirteen roeles on a rock, as a posthumous tribute to his deceased wife. You can visit the 'Piedra de los Trece Roeles' at N40° 33.822' W004° 23.707'

• The Marquise in her will provided that "neither her heirs nor her servants put black headdresses or hoods on their heads, under penalty of curse"

• The castle houses among other valuables, a brick with the signature of Santa Teresa. It may have nothing to do with it, but Saint Teresa, of authentic nobility origin, comes to treat the Dávila as relatives (to the family of the second Marqués de Las Navas)

• It seems that there is a tunnel that connects the Castle with the Convent, currently blinded. It is said that there was another tunnel leading to the Risco.

• There are mentions of a well or exit of an underground on the southern facade of the Castle, where the vault of a tunnel in which remains of stairs were seen ended. This entry gave rise to another "true legend". Called 'The Well of Witches', an arab girl of beautiful attributes was involved as it could not be otherwise, and some brave knight.

• If the researches don't fail me, the XIV Marquesa de Las Navas, today she's the German-Spanish princess Victoria von Hohenlohe-Langenburg. Also XX Condesa del Risco, among other noble titles related to the history of Las Navas del Marqués.

WHAT IS MAGALIA QUONDAM ?

Its most literal translation would be 'once hut'
Different sources give slightly different translations such as 'Once rustic house', 'Once farmers house', which would come to mean the same thing. Also alluding to agriculture at the time, with translations such as 'Place of good pastures' or 'Place of pastures in another time'. And even what Don Pedro intended with that inscription, which would come to say 'There was once an idyllic place'
A less caatic translation, 'Magalia, where are you?' would be the one that would give rise to the 'Legend of Magalia'
In any case, the Castle takes that inscription 'MAGALIA' as the common name and even officially accepted.

This Virtual Cache is part of a limited release of Virtuals created between June 4, 2019 and June 4, 2020.

From the moment I was selected to create a Virtual cache, I thought that this would be the location I would choose for it. With this cache I intend to pay homage to the Castle of my town, Las Navas del Marqués, a town to which I will always feel bound.
And what better location for a "ghost" than a castle ??

To complete the cache it is not necessary to enter the enclosure, but I advise you to consult the website of 'Turismo Las Navas' to know the opening and concerted visits schedules. Otherwise you will not have the opportunity to know the BEAUTIFUL and INTERESTING interior of the Castle.

CACHE REGISTRATION

As far as I know and I have been informed, for the registration of a virtual it is only necessary to demonstrate that it has been physically where it is required.
Also, I have learned that players can register the cache before checking the requirements, if any, by the owner.

Then, to give your registration as good, you must include a photo taken at the outer door of the Castle that meets the following requirements:

Placing yourself right next to the black mailbox on the left side of the entrance, take a picture of the lamppost located on the other side of the door (outside and above) in which your face or part of it, or your hand or part of it, or your Geocaching nick. You have an example in the photo SPOILER01 or SPOILER02

IMPORTANT: A Team, a different photo.
Common, team, or collective records will not be accepted.

Logs that do not meet these requirements will not be given as good, and will be deleted without prior notice.

OPTIONAL

If you want, you can post it to your record:

• Ignoring the differences mentioned according to different sources consulted, among the historical diary there is one that is not real. Which one ?

• Have you seen the second shield on the outer door of the enclosure? (cache coordinates) Even though I say 'second', it was really the first [wink] Do you know who it belongs to?

• Ignoring flags and signage, how many heraldic shields can you see inside the Castle grounds? (you can use decimal places to respond)

• As soon as you are an observer, you will appreciate the "union" in the construction of the most modern parts, with the supposedly ancient parts of the Castle. Above all, there are two points on different facades that caught my attention.

• Some old reviews are complicated to locate today, since the Castle does not maintain all the elements that one day existed, such as on "the noon" facade (South West). Would it be where the 'Well of the Witches' would be around? Would the vaulted mouth to which Don Fidel Pérez-Mínguez refers in his book 'Un Castillo y Varios Castellanos' (1927) be around here?
