Workplace accidents that result in serious injury or death are thankfully not the common occurrence they used to be. The reduction can be partially attributed to lessons learnt from incidents such as the one the occurred in central Upper Hutt in March 1914. Believed to be the result of illegally-stored gelignite in a grocery store, an explosion (said to have been heard as far away as Kaiwharawhara) caused eight citizens to lose their lives. These men had been fighting what was described as a “regulation store fire” and were oblivious to the danger presented by the gelignite.
To claim a find, you must locate two plaques (one on Main St and the other in Centre Walk (on the opposite side to the mural)) ar the site of the explosion and obtain the answer to the following two questions:
1. What is the sum of the seven digits on the plaque?
2. What date (month and year) was the nearby mural installed?
Answers can be sent to the cache owner by email or through the Geocaching Message Center. There is no need to wait for a response but the cache owner will contact you if there is a problem.
