Welcome to The Menesetung Bridge - Virtual
Located in what Queen Elizabeth II called the prettiest town in Canada stands a bridge. The Great Menesetung Bridge crosses the Maitland river, and while it once carried trains with cargo and passengers, it now stands just for our hiking entertainment.

The train service that crossed here was the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) Guelph-Goderich Line. The CPR was a relative latecomer to the area, arriving only in 1907. While it played a critical part to Goderich's success, after only 80 years they were looking to demolish this bridge.

Fate, however, had other plans and many local residents thought that this bridge should be preserved. They formed the Menesetung Bridge Association and purchased it. They then converted it into a walking bridge and trail. Donations and a community of volunteers worked to preserve and enhance this landmark. The bridge has become a part of the G2G Trail, the Tiger Dunlop Heritage Trail, The Maitland Trial, and the many trails that branch off from there. If you look down you can see the names of donors on the planks of the bridge. These planks now carry pedestrians where heavy loads of road graders, salt and grain once chugged along.

When the bridge was built, the first passengers arrived in Goderich on August 26, 1907. Thousands of people gathered to celebrate. Passenger trains from Guelph and other towns along the rail brought spectators and officials alike to Goderich.

You can find out more about the bridge and local history as it is told on a number of signs and placards. You can learn about the mysterious black hole, the origin of the bridge's name and some more history of the area. Of course you'll also get to enjoy the breathtaking view!
Hopefully you found this cache and location enjoyable. My vision when making the Prettiest Cache in Canada was one where you can enjoy looking out at the vista and taking a pause. Rather then spending even more time looking down at your gadgets, or proving some set of unique skills. Save those for another smiley, for this one just enjoy why we play this game, to enjoy nature and spend more time outdoors!
Enjoy The Great Menesetung Bridge.
Happy Caching!
