Geocache Description:

The Chateau Theater was built in 1927 as a vaudeville house. The construction cost was only $400,000 and it was one of the first air conditioned structures in town. It featured 1487 red velvet seats which is huge compared to today's standards, balconies, turrets and a dark blue sky (ceiling) with stars. It was used for plays, concerts, operas, vaudeville and silent and talkie movies.

The Chateau was added to the Register of Historic Places in 1980. It closed in 1983 and served as a bookstore in recent years. The Destination Medical Center Corporation and the Rochester City Council approved $1.1 million for renovation which is under way. The Chateau is scheduled to re-open later this year and will be a forum for movies, concerts, lectures, weddings and dinner events.

To qualify for this virtual simply take a photo of yourself or your group in front of the Chateau and post it to your log or, if you are shy, post a pic of your GPS or other device. Have fun and be safe.
