Geocache Description:

From the shallow inlets near Port Albert to the wide open waterways of Lakes Entrance lies the Ninety Mile Beach, an approximate 94 mile (151km) long stretch of pristine golden sand that separates the Gippsland Lakes from Bass Strait.

It’s interesting the information varies from many different sources as to where it starts and ends as well as the actual length of it. Well it is close to 90 miles.

At around the halfway mark from brings you to the virtual we have placed showing you the beauty of Gippsland and some of the Ninety Mile Beach.

Back in 1879 a sailing ship named ‘Trinculo’ met with gale force winds which drove her onto a sandbar 30 meters off shore. Immediately she swung broadside meeting her fate where she lies today.

‘Trinculo’ was on a journey from King Georges Sound WA to Newcastle NSW to pick up coal, commanded by Captain Williams. One of the seaman Thomas Lefevre bravely swam ashore with a light log-line that was used to attach a heavier line that was used to drag the crew ashore along with the Captain, his wife and infant son. Thomas was granted a silver medal from the Royal Humane Society for his bravery.

A short stroll from the carpark through the dunes via the walking track will bring you to the wreck. Right next to the Trinculo is the remains of PS Paynesville buried beneath the sands.

Logging requirements

1. Be creative and make your caching name on site, draw it in the sand, use something to spell it out.

2. Include in your log a single photo with your creative name and the wreck of ‘Trinculo’

Logs that do not meet the requirements will be deleted. An example is provided.

Enjoy the beauties that Gippsland has to offer.
