This has been a favourite picnic spot for us over the past 50 years, having made at least one visit annually a year. Tshokwane Trading Post and Picnic site is situated between Satara snd Skukluza rest camps – some 50km from Satara and about 40km from Skukuza on the H1-2. Tshokwane was A Man of Muti. Tshokwane was the name of an old Shangaan chief who lived there until his death in 1915. He was a mine of information about the tribal history of the area, and regaled Stevenson-Hamilton with stories about Swazi and Zulu raids into the area half-a-century before. The first warden of the Kruger Park was James Stevenson-Hamilton. He decided that this place wound make a good stopover when inspecting the northern areas of the old Sabi Reserve which had the Letaba River as it’s northern border. Until recently, monkeys made it impossible to cook and eat without being mugged. Today, however, life is much calmer around this picnic site.
