Welcome to the Blue Mountains.
In 1813 three explorers - Gregory BLAXLAND, William LAWSON and William Charles WENTWORTH - set off from Emu Plains on an expedition, and thus became the first Europeans to successfully cross the Blue Mountains.
The name "Blue Mountains" comes from the distinctive blue haze that surrounds the area, due to the oil from the eucalyptus trees.
BIRDS: one of the most entertaining birds in the Blue Mountains is the Lyrebird.
The Superb Lyrebird can be heard, if not seen, across the Blue Mountains. It has an extensive repertoire of mimicked calls from other birds (e.g. Magpie, Whipbird, Rosella), also a mechanical whirr and rhythmical thuds.
.
There is so much to see and do in the Blue Mountains. While here take the time to look at the Horizontal Sculpture by Noel Gray and Graystone Carvers in front of the Visitors Centre. Each of the ten panels represents an area or township of the Blue Mountains. One of the panels is a Lyrebird, which was the original photograph requirement. Walk up the steps over the Mountains, (More towns are on the other side.) Then drop in to the Visitors Centre for info on the Blue Mountains.
