HISTORY OF THE ROCK
It was once an attractive and even romantic landmark, a place where sorority women met lettermen, a hallowed icon that embodied the "spirit of alma mater."  That was how the class of 1902 envisioned it when they brought a six-foot-high quartzite boulder from Wisconsin and used it to create a drinking fountain and soothing oasis between Harris and University Halls.

In the 1940's, however, The Rock became a target for mild vandalism, as fraternity and sorority members made midnight visits and wantonly whitewashed the venerable symbol.  Initially, the administration regarded such incidents as a sacrilege, but investigations and punishment were futile.  By the 1950's, painting The Rock (by then its fountain was long defunct) became an accepted tradition.

The Rock witnessed other rebellions as well.  Over the years, protests of other kinds found their way to the old boulder, which lost its picturesque charm to much paint but retained its stalwart symbolism.

In 1989 the University moved The Rock 30 feet to the east in an effort to keep people from tracking wet paint into nearby buildings.  Unfortunately, the movers cracked the sacred stone, an embarrassment to the administration, which incurred the wrath of tradition-minded students.  "The Rock was the one enduring symbol of student autonomy." said one.

The Rock was mortared back together--technical assistance in this matter came from the materials science and engineering departments--and it was none the worse for the wear, the administration declared.  In any case, some things did not change.  Students still paint it.  Some faculty still think it's an eyesore.  It's always hard to explain to outsiders.  "It's a mystical sort of abstract presence on campus" said Patrick M. Quinn, University archivist, noting that its true meaning is as fluid as it is imprecise.

LOGGING REQUIREMENTS
Now for the rules of this Virtual Geocache: In order to claim it as a find you must post two pictures with your "Found It" log.  The required pictures are described below.  If the pictures are not attached to the "Found It" log I will contract you asking for them to be uploaded and if they are not I will have to delete your log, sorry.

  1. Take a picture of The Rock while you are at the posted coordinates. You do not have to be in the picture, but I do like seeing the people that are finding my caches. Whatever is painted on The Rock at the time you visited must be clearly visible in the picture; this will prove to me that you visited the site and visited after this cache was published. Upload this picture with your "Found It" log.

  2. While at the posted coordinates or from home (before or after your visit) you must go to the Internet Camera page (Link) and take a screenshot of The Rock.  You do not have to be in the picture, but I do like seeing the people that are finding my caches.  The Rock must be painted the same as it was when you visited the posted coordinates; this will prove to me that you visited the site and you visited after this cache was published.  Upload this screenshot/picture with your "Found It" log.

ONLY WHEN INTERNET CAMERA IS NOT WORKING:
If the Internet Camera is not working at the time of your visit and ONLY if the Internet Camera is not working you can use this method to log your find.  You must visit the two Additional Waypoints listed below and send me the answers to the two questions.  This is not and alternate way of logging the find it can only be used when the Internet Camera  is not working.
