There is plenty of history in Suffolk Virginia

One of the major things is something that was founded by Italian immigrant Amedeo Obici. He started his career as a bellhop and fruit stand vendor in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Obici later moved to Wilkes-Barre, opened his own fruit stand, and invested in a particular type of roaster. In 1906, Obici entered a partnership with Mario Peruzzi and together they started something that just about everyone has heard of today.

In 1916 a young schoolboy, Antonio Gentile, submitted drawings to a design contest. While Gentile's family originally received five dollars for winning the contest, Obici befriended them and paid Antonio’s, and four of his siblings', way through college. After Obici paid Antonio's way through medical school, he became a doctor in Newport News, where he died of a heart attack in 1939.

Today, located directly behind the Suffolk Visitor Center stand two statues.

One of the statues is a black bear which are common in the nearby Dismal Swamp area.

The other statue is the one you are looking for.  I am sure you will recognize this statue!

TO LOG THIS VIRTUAL CACHE YOU NEED TO PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING:

Visit the iconic Statue at N 36 44.253 W 076 34.922 (note: not the statue of the bear - the other one), take a picture with you and the statue and post it with your log. The on-site picture MUST include either yourself or, if you are camera shy, a piece of paper with your caching name on it.

PLEASE FOLLOW DIRECTIONS IN THE LOGGING TASK ABOVE to assure the tenure of your log. Additional photos are welcome, but the following are not acceptable substitutions for the logging task:

• Log with no photo
• Photos sent to me instead of posting them with your log

Logs not following directions will be deleted

There are a couple of optional waypoints listed for a second identical Statue located further down Main Street and for small place located downtown where you can see lots of history and memorabilia.
