L’alabastro è una pietra di origine gessosa, che può assumere diverse colorazioni a seconda del grado di purezza. In tempi lentissimi, la parte più pura del gesso si è concentrata in blocchi omogenei e trasparenti, di grande bellezza e facile manipolazione. Una luminosità e una bellezza che ha affascinato gli uomini, sin dall’antichità: la parola alabastro infatti deriva dal greco e in quella lingua indicava i preziosi vasi in cui conservare delicati unguenti e costosissimi profumi.
L' alabastro volterrano è ritenuto, indubbiamente, il più pregiato d' Europa e forse di tutto il mondo.
Esiste un legame profondo che unisce Volterra e l' alabastro, un legame che nasce circa 3.000 anni fa. Gli Etruschi utilizzavano questa pregiata ed elegante pietra per realizzare le urne cinerarie. Al Museo Etrusco Guarnacci ne sono esposte oltre 300 di grande bellezza, alcune di queste scolpite con maestria . Oggi i sapienti artigiani che riescono a creare opere uniche sono rimasti veramente in pochi. Entrambi i nostri padri, fino a pochi anni fa, erano due artigiani capaci di realizzare con passione e dedizione irripetibili sculture e manufatti unici. Spesso, le superstiti e vere botteghe artigiane, sono lontane da strade percorse dai classici flussi turistici.
Nei 9 waypoint aggiuntivi potete trovare 9 di queste rare e antiche botteghe artigiane. Per loggare la nostra cache virtuale vi chiediamo di fotografare voi stessi con il vostro nikname scritto su un foglio davanti ad almeno tre di queste botteghe e di metterle nel vostro log. Inoltre dovete spedirci ( non inseritela nel log !!! ) la foto dell'antico ed alto terrazzo incompiuto in metallo che troverete alle coordinate iniziali, sopra di voi.
Le coordinate iniziali vi porteranno in Piazza Minucci, proprio a fianco dell' Ecomuseo dell'Alabastro, interessante luogo situato presso la Pinacoteca. All'interno dell' Ecomuseo è possibile anche vedere la riproduzione fedele di una antica bottega artigiana dell'alabastro.
I log senza le 3 foto alle botteghe e senza la foto dell' antico ed alto terrazzo incompiuto, verranno cancellati.

Alabaster is a stone of chalky origin, which can take on different colors depending on the degree of purity. In very slow times, the purest part of the plaster has been concentrated in homogeneous and transparent blocks, of great beauty and easy handling. A brightness and beauty that has fascinated men since ancient times: the word alabaster in fact derives from the Greek and in that language indicated the precious vessels in which to store delicate ointments and very expensive perfumes.
Volterra alabaster is undoubtedly considered the most valuable in Europe and perhaps in the whole world.
There is a deep bond that unites Volterra and alabaster, a bond that was born about 3,000 years ago. The Etruscans used this precious and elegant stone to make cinerary urns. At the Guarnacci Etruscan Museum over 300 of great beauty are exhibited, some of these sculpted with skill. Today the skilled artisans who are able to create unique works are very few. Both of our fathers, until a few years ago, were two artisans capable of creating unique sculptures and artefacts with passion and dedication. Often, the survivors and real artisan manufactures, are far from roads crossed by the classic tourist flows.
In the 9 additional waypoints you can find 9 of these rare and ancient artisan manufactures. To log in our virtual cache we ask you to photograph yourself with your nickname written on a sheet in front of at least three of these manufactures and to put them in your log. Also you must send us (do not insert it in the log !!!) the photo of the ancient and high unfinished metal terrace that you will find at the initial coordinates, above you.
The initial coordinates will take you to Piazza Minucci, right next to the Alabaster Ecomuseum, an interesting place located at the Pinacoteca. Inside the Ecomuseum it is also possible to see the faithful reproduction of an ancient alabaster workshop.
The logs without the 3 photos of the manufactures and without the photo (sent by email) of the unfinished and ancient metal terrace will be deleted.
