The Underground Railway
With the British Commonwealth Emancipation Act of August 1, 1834, slavery was eliminated in Canada, but was still "legal" in the United States for another 31 years - until "Lincoln freed the slaves" and the Thirteenth Amendment was added to the US Constitution.
During this time, the Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses established in the United States and Canada, and used by African-American slaves to escape into free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists and allies who were sympathetic to their cause. Estimates vary widely, but at least 30,000 slaves, and potentially more than 100,000, escaped to Canada via the Underground Railroad.
Owen Sound was the Northern most and Final stop on the Underground Railway
Owen Sound's Emancipation cairn celebrates those who made the Underground Railroad possible - braving a perilous journey from slavery to freedom, while paying homage those who fought for freedom.
