La Puerta de la Ciudad fue reconstruida en el siglo XVI sobre la original puerta árabe, se abría en la Muralla de la ciudad, sirvió de vía de comunicación hacia la cuesta de La Fuente y la Plaza del Caño y era la obligada parada para los carros que llegaban para el comercio. Frente a ella la Casa del Torreón era el punto de pago de los aranceles y un punto de seguridad para evitar la entrada de saqueadores y maleantes.
Sobre su arco de medio punto se puede observar el Escudo de la ciudad, con el águila bicéfala de la casa de los Austria que premió a la ciudad por su lealtad en la batalla de las Alpujarras en 1488.. En él se puede ver una Torre, una Llave y una Cimitarra. La leyenda muestra las palabras “A la muy noble y muy leal ciudad de Mojácar, llave y amparo del reino de Granada”, una puerta de entrada a una localidad de indudable influencia musulmana.
