Harrison High School opened in September 1970 with Freshman, Sophomore and Junior classes. The Juniors were the first graduating class in June 1972. The school is named for Gerald V. Harrison who was superintendent of Farmington Public Schools from 1957 to 1967, a period of dramatic growth in the school district. Harrison was the third high school in the district, and the only one with a Freshman class. The school closed at the end of the 2018–2019 school year. The school was purchased by the city and is being developed into a recreation and performing arts center named The Hawk in tribute to the school. Construction began in fall 2019 and the center opened on June 7, 2021.
Some of the most notable Alumni to have graduated from the school are:
- Aaron Burbridge - wide receiver for the Denver Broncos
- Devin Funchess - wide receiver for the Indianapolis Colts
- Al Jean - writer, show-runner for cartoon series The Simpsons
- Michael Ojemudia - football player
- Drew Stanton - quarterback for the Cleveland Browns
- Khalid Kareem - defensive end for the Cincinnati Bengals and formerly Notre Dame
Since the school had opened they had always been well known for their amazing Athletic Department, most notably the Football program. At the helm was head coach John Herrington for the entire school history. He was also the only remaining original staff member left at the school at the time of closing. During the schools history, Coach Herrington set the state record for winning the state championships thirteen times, with nine undefeated seasons and a total of 435 total wins.
Coach Herrington's football program produced eleven NFL players that came from the school including one that made it to Superbowl 39. All of this was largely due to Coach's well known concept condtioning drill called "STP" which stood for Strength, Toughness, Pride.
When standing at these coordinates, you will be between two pillars at the entrance to the Herrington Athletic Complex that have plaques for the thirteen state titles mounted to them. They display the stats for that season, as well as the players on the team that year. Nearby are two shorter pillars with plaques on them. Using these two pillars, please email or message me the answers to the following questions using the GC messaging system:
1. Looking at the pillar on the left, how many "Hawk Coaches" assisted Herrington over the years? You will also notice the bottom of this plaque has the famous "STP" on it.
2. What well known Alumni and Family donated the plaque on this pillar?
3. Looking at the pillar on the right, to whom is this plaque dedicated to and why? (Second sentence of plaque)
4. What was the birth and death year of the person in question 3?
5. Please take a photo of you or your gps at the complex entrance. (Can be included with your log)
