Geocache Description:

Fredriksten festning

Fredriksten fortress

Fredriksten fortress is a fortress in Halden (the city was named Fredrikshald from 1665 to 1928). Where the fortress is today, minor defenses was built in connection with Hannibalfeiden (a war between Denmark-Norway and Sweden in 1643-1645). Fredriksten fortress itself was started in 1661, and is named after the Danish-Norwegian king Frederik III (1609-1670). The fortress was besieged six times, but never taken.

Fredriksten fortress is a popular arena for events. Festivals, car events, bike races, russe meets , concerts, opera, etc. is arranged anually in the fortress area. The fortress contains a lot of historic places and places which have their own stories to tell. With this virtual, you will see two of them, and there are more places to see between the waypoints.

First stop - Carl XII memorial

Under the Swedish invasion in 1716 Fredriksten was besieged for a short while, but when the citizens burned their city to the ground, the Swedes stopped the siege. In 1718 Carl XII was back with a overwhelming force. Gyldenløve fort was shot to pieces and had to be surrendered, but the fortress itself was not taken. Under the siege, December 11th 1718, Carl XII was shot and killed, and the siege was stopped almost immediately.

Second stop - Bell tower

The Bell tower is on the highest point of Fredriksten. It was originally used as a warning system in case of fire and surprise attacks. The Bell tower was built in 1671, and since then it has been destroyed by lightning, and later burned down in the city fire in 1826. The Bell tower as we know it today was finished in 1833.

This is a mythic place, and the legend goes that the ghost of The White Lady roams this place. She took her life by throwing herself off the walls. However, this is a completely different story .
