History
Leeds Castle has a long history dating back to before 857. At that point the site was owned by a Saxon chief called Led or Leed, at that point the castle consited of a wooden structure situated on two islands in the River Len. The castle was rebuilt into stone in 1119 by Robert de Crevecoeur to enable the castle to be used as a Norman stronghold.
From 1519, Henry VIII used it as a dwelling for his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, from that point onwards the castle fell into the hands of the Culpepper's before it was passed into the possession of the Wykeham Martins who spent a large amount of money on the repair and renovation of the castle which largly resulted in it's apperance today.
Lady Baillie who became the last private owner of the castle purchased it in 1926 for £180,000. She redecorated the castle and added various features to the interior. She also allowed use of it during World War II where it was used as a hospital for burned Commonwealth airmen. Upon Lady Baillie's death in 1974 the castle was left to the Leeds Castle Foundation, a private charitable trust whose aim is to preserve the castle and grounds for the benefit of the public.
