Geocache Description:

This is a Virtual Cache. There is no physical cache container at the coordinates.

Here you may look out over the beautiful Wailua River as it flows from the slopes of Mount Wai’ale’ale to the east-central coast of Kaua’i, meeting the ocean between Lihu’e and Kapa’a. Besides being a great place to go kayaking or to enjoy a leisurely tour boat ride, this river is steeped in history.

Polynesian settlers from Tahiti arrived in the 13th century and developed this valley. A complex of heiau’s (temples) for use by the their ali’i (royalty) and priests soon followed along the river. The site of one of the larger heiau is just northwest of the given coordinates. There is more information about the heiau from Hawaii State Parks.

The interpretive signs discuss the history of the valley from this time onward. Notable is the Hawaiian division of the island into moku (districts) and ahupuaʻa (subdivisions based on water source).

To claim credit for this virtual cache, please fulfill these requirements:

In an e-mail or message via geocaching.com, answer these questions based on the informational on the signs. (do NOT write this information in your log.)

  1. The date and time of your visit, and how many people, cachers and muggles, in your group today?
  2. To what god was the Poli’ahu heiau believed to have been dedicated?
  3. What was the rough boundary of the area known as “Wailuanuiaho’ano” (according to the information on the sign)
  4. What is the three-digit number on the smaller brown sign to the right of the fourth interpretive sign? This is the tricky one! It may be laying on the ground, according to a recent (Feb. 2024) visitor.

You do not need to wait for a response before logging, but you should send your answers within seven days of your visit. One message can cover all the cachers in your group, just be sure to mention their caching names. Your find date should be the date of your visit.

Optional (but always nice) Include a picture of yourself and/or your group overlooking the Wailua in your log.
