Wenn man sich in Basel genau umschaut, kann man an so vielen Orten kleine und grosse Baselstäbe - oder Baslerstab, wie wir in Dialekt sagen - entdecken. An Gebäuden, an Brunnen, am Boden….

Genau dies soll dieser virtuelle Cache ermöglichen. Mach dich auf die Suche nach Baselstäben!

Geschichte des Baselstabs, dem Basler Wappen

Ein schwarzer Stab, oben gekrümmt mit einem Knauf, in der Mitte drei abgerundete Querbalken und unten mit drei Spitzen versehen, das ist das Zeichen (Wappen) der Stadt Basel.

Der Baselstab hat seinen Ursprung im Krummstab (Symbol der Herrschaft) der Bischöfe von Basel.

Den ältesten Beleg für den Krummstab als heraldisches Zeichen der Bischöfe von Basel liefert uns eine Münze: auf einem Dünnpfennig, der zwischen 1072 und 1133 geprägt wurde, ist ein Krummstab zu sehen. Als Unterscheidung zum roten Baselstab der Bischöfe war der städtische Baselstab hingegen schwarz.
Für einige Jahre kam Basel sogar zu einem Baselstab aus Gold. 1512 verlieh Papst Julius II. den Baslern für ihre Hilfe bei seinem Krieg gegen Frankreich das Privileg, ihren schwarzen Stab golden zu färben. In der Leonhardskirche (N 47° 33.302 E 007° 35.284) ist ganz oben im Ostfenster ein goldener Baselstab zu sehen.

Mit der Reformation 1529 trennten sich die Basler vom Papst und der katholischen Kirche. Damit wurde der Baselstab definitiv wieder schwarz.

In früheren Tagen gab es keine verbindliche Ausrichtung beim Baselstab - er sah einmal nach links und einmal nach rechts. Zu sehen ist dies am Basler Rathaus, wo die Baselstäbe über den drei spitzbogigen Toren zum Marktplatz hin in beide Richtungen blicken. Spätestens seit der Kantonstrennung (Basel-Stadt und Basel-Land) 1833 blickt der Stab von Basel nun definitiv nach links, jener von Baselland ist rot und nach rechts gewandt.

Schildhalter sind Löwen, wilde Männer, Engel und seit dem 15. Jahrhundert auch Basilisken - das sind Drachen mit Hahnenkopf und Schlangenschwanz.

Deine Aufgaben, um loggen zu können:

1. Drucke dir die PDF-Datei mit den Bildern und den Koordinaten aus.

2. Besuche alle 8 Orte in der Basler Altstadt und schau dich gut um. Finde die Baselstäbe und ordne sie zu. Die Koordinaten weisen nicht punktgenau auf die Baselstäbe, sie sind aber in der Nähe zu finden. Manchmal muss man in die Höhe schauen.

3. Bilde aus den Buchstaben das Lösungswort (9 Buchstaben):

5. Bitte gib in der Betreffzeile GC89028 und deinen Cachernamen ein. Sollte deine Lösung richtig sein, erhältst du umgehend eine E-Mail mit Logerlaubnis.

6. Mache ein Foto von dir und/oder deinem GPS Gerät vor einem Baselstab in der Stadt (also keine Bilder aus dem Netz verwenden!) und füge es deinem Log bei.

The Baselstab

If you look around closely you will find many small and large Baselstäbe in town. Whether it is on buildings, fountains or even on the ground.

And that’s exactly the aim of this cache. So, go look for the Baselstäbe!

A black rod, curved on the top with a knob, three rounded crossbars in the middle and three spikes at the bottom. That is the coat of arms of Basel.
It originated from the crozier (a symbol for power) used by the bishops of Basel.

The oldest record of the crozier as a heraldic symbol used by Basel’s Bishops is found on a coin: a thin penny that was minted between 1072 and 1133.

The Baselstab was black in contrast to the red crozier of the bishops.

For a few years Basel even owned a Baselstab made from gold. In 1512 Pope Julius II allowed the city of Basel to colour their black rod golden, as a recognition for their help during he war against the French.
During the reformation in 1529 Basel the city of Basel separated itself from the Pope and the catholic church and the Baselstab returned to its original colour: black.

In the early days it did not matter which direction the Baselstab was facing. You will be able to see that in the town hall of Basel. The Baselstab is however facing left since the separation of the cantons Basel-Stadt and Basel-Land in the year 1833. The Baselstab of Basel-Land is red and facing to the right.asel-Land is red and facing to the right.

The Baselstäbe are held by lions, wild men, angels and since the 15th century also by basilisks (dragons with a faucet head and a snake’s tail).

Your tasks to log the cache:

1. Print out the PDF-file containing the pictures and coordinates.

2. Visit all 8 locations in the old town of Basel. Look around. Find the Baselstäbe and match them with the right location. The coordinates aren’t precisely locating the Baselstäbe but will direct you to the area nearby. Sometimes you have to look up.

3. Connect the letters to recieve the correct solution word (9 letters):

5. Enter GC89028 and your cachername as the e-mail subject. If the solution is correct you will immediately recieve an e-mail containing the log-permission.

6. Take a picture of you and/or your GPS Device in front of a Baselstab in town (do not use pictures from the internet! )and add it to your log.
