Geocache Description:

Any visitor to Ullapool cannot fail to notice the handsome clock situated at the junction of West Argyle Street and Quay Street opposite the Caledonian Hotel. Said to be the most photographed clock in the Highlands, the Fowler Memorial Clock was originally erected in 1899 and sited in the middle of the road but was moved to its current position in the 1960s.

The clock was erected by the friends of Sir J. Arthur Fowler ‘in remembrance of his unfailing devotion to the interests and welfare of of the people of Loch Broom’. Sir Arthur lived with his family at Braemore House near Corrieshalloch Gorge. The Braemore estate was originally purchased in 1857 by Sir Arthur's father, Sir John Fowler, 1st baronet, an eminent railway engineer who was also responsible for the design of the Forth Railway Bridge. Sir Arthur inherited the baronetcy on his father's death in 1898 but died less than a year later in 1899.

The clock also commemorates two of Sir Arthur’s sons who were killed in action during the First World War. Sir John Edward Fowler, 3rd Baronet, died in 1915 and his younger brother Captain Alan Fowler fell in the same year.

To claim this virtual, please email or message us the answers to the following questions:

1. In which regiments did the two brothers serve?

2. How many words on the sixth line of the memorial to the third baronet?

3. How many silver curlicues are there at the base of the pillar where it joins the square plinth? (See photo of curlicue on the cache page if you’re not sure what to look for)

Please note that logs without answers will be deleted. You are welcome to post a photo as well (providing it does not disclose any of the information asked for) but answering the questions is the prime requirement.
