Narrative

Goodsprings, Nevada

Goodsprings is an unincorporated community in Clark County, Nevada. The population was 229 at the 2010 census. Named for Joseph Good, whose cattle frequented a spring nestled in the southeastern foothills of the Spring Mountains, Goodsprings was once the heart of the most productive mining districts in Clark County. Over the years, lead, silver, copper, zinc and gold have all been mined from this area. In 1904, Salt Lake City mining interests platted the Goodsprings Township.

The Goodsprings Schoolhouse was erected in 1913. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, it is the oldest school in Clark County that was built as a school and is still used as a school. The Pioneer Saloon was also erected in 1913 and is considered to be one of the oldest saloons in Nevada. The saloon houses a bullet hole on the side of the building and a coroner's letter describing how it was created. The saloon is said by many to be haunted by the victim's ghost. In addition, the Pioneer Saloon has a small memorial to both Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. Ms. Lombard's plane TWA Flight 3 crashed into nearby Potosi Mountain on January 16, 1942. The saloon and hotel were the centers of operations for the search.

Good's Spring Site

This spring area, discovered first by Anasazi and Paiute Indians, sustained the first mule train that pioneered the Old Spanish Trail between Santa Fe and Los Angeles. Antonio Armijo camped here with 60 men and 100 mules on January 11, 1830. He called it "Ojito de Tortuga" or "Little Spring of the Tortoise". The spring was later named Good's Spring after Joseph Good, a miner and cattleman who settled in the area in the 1860s.

Campbell Stone Cabin

Wealthy Utah mining investor and promoter A.G. Campbell built this stone cabin in 1886. It is the oldest building in Goodsprings and one of the oldest standing buildings in Clark County.

Goodsprings School

Built in 1913, it is the oldest school in Clark County that was built as a school and is still used as a school today. It has been remodeled over the years, but still stands as completed with an addition in 1916.

Yellow Pine Mill Site

The mill was built in 1898 and expanded in 1910. Most of the mill buildings were destroyed by a fire in 1929. Only the foundations are visible today.

Pioneer Saloon

The saloon was erected in 1913 by George Fayle using a prefabricated kit and is considered to be one of the oldest saloons in Nevada. Goodsprings had seven bars in 1916, but only the Pioneer Saloon remains and is open for business.
