Der Name ‚Pfalz‘ stammt vom lateinischen Wort Palatium und bedeutet Palast. Die grosszügige Sandstein-Terrasse mit alten Kastanien-Bäumen hoch über dem Rhein befindet sich hinter dem Basler Münster. Sie wird so genannt, weil der Bischof von Basel einst in unmittelbarer Nähe seinen Wohnsitz hatte.
Schon Johann Peter Hebel war von diesem idyllischen Aussichtspunkt beeindruckt und widmete ihm in seinem Gedicht ‚z’Basel an mym Rhy‘ um 1806 sogar eine eigene Strophe:
Aber uf der Pfalz
Alle Lüte gfallt’s.
O, wie wechsle Berg un Tal,
Land un Wasser überal,
Vor der Basler,
Vor der Basler Pfalz!
Die Pfalz ist ein gern besuchter Ort für Touristen, Hochzeitsgesellschaften und Schulklassen. Auch wenn sie selten leer anzutreffen ist, büsst sie nichts von ihrer einzigartigen Atmosphäre ein. Mach dir selbst ein Bild davon!

3. Auf der Sandsteinbrüstung ist eine runde Plakette zur Erinnerung an eine Feier eingelassen. Dreistelliger Jahreszahl = B
4. Nahe des Abgangs zur Fähre ist neben ‚WC‘ und ‚Fähre’ noch ein anderes Wort in Stein gemeisselt. Welches? Wort in Kleinbuchstaben = C

The name 'Pfalz' comes from the Latin word Palatium and means palace. The spacious sandstone terrace with old chestnut trees high above the Rhine is located behind the Basel cathedral. It is so called because the bishop of Basel once lived in the immediate vicinity.
Johann Peter Hebel was already impressed by this idyllic vantage point and even dedicated a verse to it in his poem 'z'Basel an mym Rhy' around 1806:
