Geocache Description:

Hatley Park National Historic Site was originally an estate built by James and Laura Dunsmuir. James was the Lieutenant Governor of BC when he purchased the property in 1906. Famous architect, Samuel Maclure was commissioned to build a 40 room mansion in the Scottish baronial/Tudor Revival style which was popular during that period. They had many gardens built with the help of garden designers Franklin Brett and George T Hall. The property remained in the Dunsmuir family until 1937 when Laura passed away. After her death, the estate was sold to the Government of Canada in 1939. At the outbreak of World War II, it was planned that King Edward VI and his family would come to reside in the mansion; however, they decided to remain in England. In 1948, the property became the Royal Roads Military College. In 1995, the military college closed and in September of that year Royal Roads University opened. In the same year, it was designated a National Historic Site of Canada. It is a public, degree granting university; however, it is still the property of the Goverment of Canada, Department of National Defence. There are beautiful gardens, trails, buildings and a lot of history at this site and on the grounds. To enter the mansion, you may enter at the museum which is on the lower level. Public washrooms are in the museum. area. If you want to take a tour of the mansion, you may do so only on a scheduled tour and there are fees. There is no need to pay any fees except for parking to complete this virtual. Answer the following questions and send the answers by geocaching messaging to me.
