A View to Piel Castle
The location for this Virtual Cache is one of my favourite places in Furness. The scenery is great here whatever the weather.
From the listed co-ordinates, you'll see two (possibly three) landmarks for you to marvel at.
📍 Piel Castle
A 14th Century castle originally built by the Abbott of Furness Abbey to oversee trade and defend against Scottish Raids. The castle fell into ruin after King Henry VIII ordered the dissolution of the Furness Abbey and the castle became a procession of the Crown. Fast forward to the 20th Century and the castle and the island were gifted to the town of Barrow-in-Furness in memorial of those who had lost their lives in the Great War. The castle is now managed by English Heritage (More information including how to arrange a ferry to Piel Island is available HERE)
📍RNLI Barrow Lifeboat Station
A lifeboat station has been present in the vicinity since 1889. The current building was constructed (More information including how to arrange a walk around the station itself, HERE)
📍Blackpool Tower (on a clear day)
I'd always joked with my friends that I could see my house from Blackpool Tower. From here, on a clear day, you can see Blackpool Tower!
To claim a find for this cache...
✅ Visit Roa Island at the end of Piel Street
✅ Take a photo of your and/or your team with the Lifeboat Station over one shoulder and Piel Castle over the other.
✅ If you're camera shy, instead of a photo of your and/or your team, please hold up a sign with your Geocaching.com display name (the name needs to be clearly legible in your log)
I'm looking for something like this:
Sadly, your 'Found' log will be deleted if:
❌ Your photo is not taken from Roa Island at the end of Piel Street, beside the benches at the top of the jetty. Yes, this does mean that photos from Piel Island itself, Walney Island, a boat, a plane or any where else that isn't Roa Island are not acceptable.
❌ Your photo doesn't include you or your team or a sign with your Geocaching.com display name.
❌ Your photo doesn't include the lifeboat station AND Piel Castle. Yes, this does mean that is the weather is terrible and the castle can't be seen, this does mean you won't be able to log a find. Please check the weather forecast before attempting. Sorry, no concessions will be made.
