Velkommen til Kleivodden!
Her ser du ut mot storhavet, neste stopp Grønland. På vinteren og når det er høststormer kan det være ganske heftig her, når bårene bryter mot land.
Kleivodden var tidligere utskytningssted for raketter. Oksbåsen rakettskytefelt litt lenger nord er fortsatt aktivt, og de skyter opp raketter i forsningsøyemed fra tid til annen. Da rasteplassen ble anlagt var oppgaven å rydde opp, samt legge til rette for parkering og et utkikkspunkt mot himmel, hav og fjell. Rasteplassen er en del av satsingen "Nasjonale Turistveger", og er designet av arkitekt Inge Dahlman.
Mot nord ligger tettstedet Andenes. Andenes er et gammelt fiskevær, og ligger unikt til med kort avstand ut til Eggakanten (altså skråningen ned fra kontinentalsokkelen mot dyphavet). Her har fisket vært rikt til alle tider, noe også hvalene nyter godt av. Dermed er også hvalsafari blitt en viktig geskjeft for folket på Andenes.
Mot vest/sørvest (ca 240 grader) ser du en liten øy ute i havet, med en karakteristisk silhuett. Dette er Bleiksøya.
Bleiksøya er Nordlands nordligste fuglefjell, og her finnes blant annet krykkje, lomvi, alke, lunde, havhest, havsvale, toppskarv og havørn. Tidligere har det hekket 75.000 par med lundefugler her (1988), men bestandene av sjøfugl er dessverre truet. Det er mest sannsynlig ingen hekkende krykkjer igjen, og antall lundefugler var i 2013 estimert til rundt 11.000 par. Øya er et naturreservat, og har ferdselsforbud i perioden 15. april til 31. juli for å beskytte de hekkende sjøfuglene.

Enjoy the view of the ocean! Iif you go far enough out to sea from here, you can go all the way to Greenland without meeting any other land on the way. In autumn- and wintertime the weather can be really something here, with the waves breaking towards land.
Kleivodden used to be a launching point for rockets. They still launch rockets for scientific purposes at Oksebåsen a bit further north. But when they prepared the rest area at Kleivodden the aspect was to clean up the area, to make space for parking and a viewpoint where you can enjoy the view of sea, sky and moutains. The rest area was designed by landscape architect Inge Dahlman, and is a part of the “national tourist roads”-project in Norway.
To the north is the fishing municipality of Andenes. It has a unique location close to the “Egga” edge. (Egga is the slope from the continental shelf down to he deep ocean). The fishing is good in this area, and the whales also enjoy the rich amounts of fish. Whale safari has been more and more popular, and going for whale safari from Andenes is reckoned one of the places you are almost guaranteed to see the big animals.
At west/southwest (about 240 degrees) you can see a small island with a characteristic silhouette. This is Bleiksøya.
Bleiksøya is the northernmost bird mountain in Nordland county. You can find among others birds puffin (Fratercula arctica), white-taled eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) common murre (Uria aalge), razorbill (Alca torda), northern fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis), european storm-petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus) and european shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis). Earlier it nested at least 75.000 couples of puffins on Bleiksøya (1988), but in 2013 the numbers was estimated to only 11.000 pairs. Kittiwake is not nesting anymore at the little island. The island is a nature reserve, and in the period 15. april to 31. july each year it is not allowed to land or walk at the island. This is in order to protect the nesting seabirds.
The task:
Take a photo where you point at the Bleiksøya. You do not have to appear in the picture yourself, you can point with anything. If the weather conditions makes the little island hard to see, you can snap a photo where you point to the waves breaking over the rocks outside of Kleivodden in stead.
