This virtual cache brings you to the Ogden Point Breakwater, a Victoria landmark since 1916. During your 2 km walk, you will learn about the history of the breakwater, admire a magnificent mural, enjoy scenic views, observe wildlife and look at mammoth cruise ships (from May to October). There are also several geocaches on your route and nearby. Street parking is available.
1) Go to the posted coordinates where you will find an information panel on the breakwater, its history and the land and water wildlife you can observe. The breakwater has been protecting Victoria wharves and the entrance to Victoria Harbour since 1916. The breakwater has since become very popular with pedestrians.
2) Walk 70 meters west to the first waypoint where you will find another panel directing your attention to the spectacular Land and Sea Mural created by members of the South Salish Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. The mural, Canada’s largest, transformed the breakwater into an eloquent bridge between cultures.
3) Finally, proceed to the last waypoint, at the end of the breakwater. Along the way, you may see river otters, harbour seals, oystercatchers, mergansers, kingfishers and other wildlife. You will often see divers observing the underwater life and fishers trying to catch the local bounty. Take time to enjoy the views towards the snow-capped Olympic Mountains in the South, Victoria’s western suburbs and the Sooke Hills in the West, and Beacon Hill Park in the East. On your return trip, you will be looking at Victoria’s skyline.
To log this cache as a find, you must send us the answers to the following questions (do not post them in your log):
1) On the information panel at the posted coordinates, name two of the sea creatures that have a calcareous skeleton underneath the skin and tube feet.
2) On the information panel at the first waypoint, what’s the name of the First Nation village that was closest to Ogden Point?
3) At the last waypoint, look at the plaque on the lighthouse. To whom is it dedicated? You are also encouraged to post a picture of yourself at the lighthouse, or a picture of your gps or your phone with the lighthouse.
Of course, pictures of wildlife and vistas are also welcome.

Cette cache virtuelle vous amène au brise-lames de Ogden Point, un point de repère de Victoria depuis 1916. Au cours de votre promenade de 2 km, vous pourrez vous renseigner sur l’histoire du brise-lames, admirer une magnifique murale et des paysages spectaculaires, observer des animaux marins et terrestres et voir d’énormes bateaux de croisière (entre mai et octobre). Vous trouverez plusieurs géocaches le long de votre parcours et dans les environs. On peut stationner dans les rues avoisinantes.
1) Aux coordonnées de la cache, vous trouverez un panneau explicatif sur le brise-lames, son histoire et les animaux marins et terrestres que vous pourrez y observer. Le brise-lames protège les quais et l’entrée du port de Victoria depuis 1916. Il a toujours été très populaire auprès des piétons.
2) Marchez 70 mètres vers le premier « waypoint ». Vous y trouverez des informations sur la spectaculaire « Land and Sea Mural » créée par les membres des nations South Salish Esquimalt et Songhees. Cette murale, la plus longue au Canada, a transformé le brise-lames en un pont qui rapproche les cultures.
3) Finalement, dirigez-vous vers le dernier « waypoint », au bout du brise-lames. En cours de route, vous verrez peut-être des loutres, des phoques, des huîtriers, des harles, des martins-pêcheurs et d’autres animaux. Souvent, vous verrez des plongeurs qui observent la vie sous-marine et des pêcheurs à la ligne. Prenez le temps d’admirer les montagnes Olympiques enneigées au sud, les banlieues de Victoria et les collines de Sooke à l’Ouest, et le parc Beacon Hill à l’Est. Sur le chemin du retour, vous verrez la ville de Victoria.

2) Sur le panneau d’information au premier « waypoint », quel est le nom du village des Premières Nations le plus près de Ogden Point?
3) Au dernier « waypoint », regarder la plaque qui se trouve sur le phare. À qui est-elle dédiée?On vous encourage également à afficher votre photo près du phare, ou encore une photo de votre gps ou de votre téléphone au même endroit. Bien sûr, les photos d’animaux et de paysages sont toujours les bienvenues.
